Rubber ducks welcome new, sustainable water feature at Zilker Botanical Garden


MAKE A PLEA DEAL.ERIN:THE ZILKER BOTANICAL GARDEN UNVEILED A BEAUTIFUL NEW FEATURE THEY HOPE WILL SAVE LOTS OF WASTED WATER.THEY HELD A RIBBON CUTTING THIS MORNING AT THE 60TH ANNUAL ZILKER GARDEN FESTIVAL… AND PUT RUBBER DUCKS IN THE WATER TO CELEBRATE.THE PROJECT REPLACES THE ORIGINAL STREAM-BED, WHICH OPENED IN THE 1960’S.IT LEAKED MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF WATER EACH YEAR.BUT THE NEW WATER SYSTEM IS SET TO RESTORE THE DAMAGE DONE.KIMBERLY MCNEELEY- ACTING DIRECTOR FOR THE PARKS AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT: “WE’RE EXPECTING THIS AREA TO BE ABLE TO BE A NATURAL HABITAT FOR CREATURES THAT WOULD LOVE TO BE IN THIS SPACE AND THEN FOR EVENTUALLY US TO BE ABLE TO USE IT TO HELP INDIVIDUALS LEARN ABOUT THEIR ENVIRONMENT HERE IN AUSTIN.” THE PROJECT TOOK THREE MONTHS TO COMPLETE — AND IS NOW OPEN
