OF YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, THE PRIDE OF YOUR
GRANDMOTHERS AND GRANDFATHERS, HERE YOU SIT. LET ME ASK YOU, STUDENTS, HOW MANY OF YOU ARE THE FIRST

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT COVINO AND NOW IT IS MY PLEASURE
TO INTRODUCE OUR STUDENT SPEAKER FOR TODAY. MOHAMED A. KHENIFER
IS A MEDICAL DOCTOR IN EGYPT. DISSATISFIED WITH THE STATE OF
HEALTH CARE IN HIS HOMELAND, MOHAMED CAME TO THE U.S. TO DISCOVER WAYS
OF IMPROVING EGYPT’S SYSTEM. WHILE AT CAL STATE L.A.,
HE VOLUNTEERED AT ALTAMED HEALTH SERVICE
CORPORATION; HE WAS A MEMBER OF LAST YEAR’S
OHIO WINNING COLLEGE BOWL TEAM; HE WON AN AWARD FOR
BEST PRESENTATION AT A RECENT INTERNATIONAL
RESEARCH AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE. TODAY MOHAMED GRADUATES
WITH A MASTER’S OF SCIENCE IN HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT. HE PLANS TO USE THE LESSONS
HE’S LEARNED AT CAL STATE L.A. TO CREATE A NEW AND BETTER
REALITY FOR PATIENTS IN EGYPT. PLEASE WELCOME
MOHAMED A. KHENIFER. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] MOHAMED: GOOD MORNING.
EDUCATION– OKAY. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] “EDUCATION IS THE
MOST POWERFUL WEAPON WHICH YOU CAN USE
TO CHANGE THE WORLD.” NELSON MANDELA.
SO, HERE WE ARE. FINALLY, WE HAVE REACHED THE
END OF OUR HARD WORK AND STUDY. PRESIDENT COVINO,
DEAN GOODRICH, ASSOCIATE DEAN HSIEH, FACULTY,
STAFF, CLASS OF 2015, AND DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, THANK YOU FOR GIVING ME
THE CHANCE TO TELL MY STORY. FOR MANY YEARS,
I’VE HAD THE DESIRE TO CHANGE THE REALITY
OF MY COUNTRY. I AM AN EGYPTIAN
MEDICAL DOCTOR. EVERY DAY,
MILLIONS OF EGYPTIANS SEEK ACCESS TO BETTER HEALTH
CARE SERVICES AND RESOURCES. I ONCE WATCHED AN OLD MAN
CRYING IN DESPERATION BECAUSE HE WAS UNABLE TO PAY
FOR HIS DAUGHTER’S TREATMENT. I ONCE SAW A WIFE
LOSE HER HUSBAND BECAUSE OF A LATE DIAGNOSIS
OF CANCER. THESE THINGS ARE VERY
DIFFICULT TO ENDURE FIRSTHAND. DIFFICULT, YES,
BUT THESE THINGS CAN BE CHANGED. IT’S NEVER TOO LATE
TO CHANGE OUR REALITY. OUR LIFE IS LIKE A JOURNEY;
GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS WILL COME AND GO. IT’S UP TO US
TO DECIDE NOT TO GIVE UP. ONE DAY, I MADE A DECISION
TO FURTHER MY EDUCATION TO BE BETTER EQUIPPED TO ADDRESS THE REALITY
OF HEALTH CARE IN MY COUNTRY. THE DAY I MADE THE DECISION
TO COME TO THE UNITED STATES WAS ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING
DAYS OF MY LIFE. I FACED AN UNKNOWN FUTURE. I LEFT BEHIND MY FAMILY,
FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, AND A STEADY CAREER
AT THE HOSPITAL. I TRADED IT ALL FOR THE
POSSIBILITY OF A BETTER FUTURE. THE POSSIBILITY TO CHANGE
THE REALITY OF EGYPT. MANY OF MY FRIENDS
TOLD ME THAT AMERICA WAS NOT A SUITABLE PLACE
TO LEARN HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT. IN AMERICA, THEY SAID,
EVERYBODY IS INSURED AND PAYS ALL THE MEDICAL BILLS. I LATER LEARNED THAT THIS WAS
NOT EXACTLY THE CASE. ALMOST TILL NOW 15 PERCENT
OF AMERICANS REMAIN UNINSURED. IN AMERICA, THEY SAID,
YOU WILL NOT LEARN THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU IN EGYPT. BUT MAYBE MY DREAMS
WERE BIGGER THAN I WAS. MAYBE MY DREAMS WOULD HELP ME
OVERCOME MY FRIENDS’ SKEPTICISM. I DECIDED THAT I WAS GOING
TO LOS ANGELES. MY FIRST QUARTER
AT CAL STATE L.A. WAS DIFFICULT. I GOT A “C”
ON MY FIRST MID-TERM. I EVEN DIDN’T PASS
THE WRITING EXAM. I FOUND MYSELF DOUBTING THAT
I HAD MADE THE RIGHT DECISION. I FELT FRUSTRATED. AS HARD AS I TRIED, I COULDN’T
SEEM TO GET GOOD RESULTS. I DOUBTED THAT I COULD SUCCEED. I DOUBTED
THAT I WOULD ACHIEVE ANYTHING THAT WOULD EVER LET ME CHANGE
THE REALITY OF MY COUNTRY. I DID ‘NT GIVE UP. I THOUGHT ABOUT THE PEOPLE
I ADMIRED MOST IN MY PROGRAM HERE
AT CAL STATE L.A. THESE PEOPLE WERE
FIGHTERS AND CHAMPIONS. THE FIGHTERS I ADMIRED
WORKED HARD TO HELP THE UNDER SERVED
POOR IN CALIFORNIA, TYPICALLY THROUGH
THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. THEY DID ‘NT GIVE UP,
EVEN FACED WITH SEEMINGLY IMPOSSIBLE TASKS. THE CHAMPIONS I ADMIRED
HAD ACHIEVED THEIR GOALS THROUGH HARD WORK
AND EDUCATION. SOME OF THESE
FIGHTERS AND CHAMPIONS ARE TODAY HERE,
IN THE AUDIENCE. THEY SHARE MY VISION
THAT WE CAN AND SHOULD PROVIDE THE BEST HEALTH CARE
TO ALL PEOPLE. THEY ARE TRYING TO CHANGE
THE REALITY JUST AS I WANT TO CHANGE MINE. SO, I COMPLETED THE STUDY OF
HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, WITH SOME SUCCESSES
UNDER MY BELT. FOR EXAMPLE, CAL STATE L.A.’S
HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT TEAM TWICE BESTED THE STUDENTS
OTHER PROGRAMS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ANNUAL
COLLEGE BOWL COMPETITION. THAT MEANS WE BEAT
UCLA THE FIRST YEAR AND USC THE SECOND ONE. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] I CAN STILL VIVIDLY REMEMBER
ONE OF MY TEAMMATES WHO MADE MONEY “RAIN” DURING
A PROFESSIONAL COMPETITION IN FRONT OF
HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVES. BUT THE INNOVATIVE ILLUSTRATION
DID MORE THAN ENTERTAIN, IT CHANGED THE REALITY. CAL STATE L.A. WENT FROM LAST
PLACES TO AMONG THE TOP THREE. IN CLOSING, TODAY I CELEBRATE
A NEW YEAR IN MY LIFE IN ADDITION TO CELEBRATING
A NEW STEP IN OUR LIVES! ACTUALLY YESTERDAY
WAS MY BIRTHDAY. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] I SAW NOW TO YOU EVERYONE, HERE CAN CHANGE REALITY. LET’S START
WITH OUR FAMILIES. TO EVERY MOM AND DAD HERE TODAY, YOU’VE UNDOUBTEDLY
ADDED VALUE TO THIS WORLD. YOU HAVE ALREADY CHANGED
REALITY. IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON
TO MAKE A CHANGE. PLEASE LOOK THE UNIVERSITY
SEAL AROUND YOU EVERYWHERE. FOR ME– LOOK IN THE CENTER. FOR ME THIS IS SUN AND WHAT’S GOING OUT
ARE RAYS IN MANY DIRECTIONS. THESE RAYS
ARE KNOWLEDGE. THESE RAYS ARE NOW
CROSSING THE OCEAN. AND IT WILL REACH SOON, EGYPT. I’LL CHERISH TODAY
AND FOREVER BOOKMARK IT
AS THE PART IN MY LIFE WHERE I BEGIN TO IMPLEMENT
“CHANGE.” THE RAYS OF KNOWLEDGE I’VE
GAINED HERE WILL HELP ME TO CHANGE REALITY
WHEN I GO BACK TO EGYPT. ONE DAY, MY DREAM
WILL BECOME A REALITY AND I’LL BE SURE TO REMEMBER
CAL STATE L.A. AS THE INSTITUTION THAT
INITIATED IT ALL. ONE DAY I’LL REMEMBER
HOW I ACHIEVED SUCCESS IN AN ENVIRONMENT
THAT RESPECTS DIVERSITY, IMPROVES THE COMMUNITY,
AND VALUES EDUCATION. AS I GET READY TO CONTINUE
MY MISSION IN EGYPT, I CAN ASSURE YOU ALL
THAT I’LL WORK TIRELESSLY TO IMPLEMENT
WHAT I’VE LEARNED HERE. I CAN ALSO PROMISE YOU ALL
THAT I’LL BE BACK TO CAL STATE L.A. TO CELEBRATE
THE SUCCESS OF MY ENDEAVORS. AND IT WON’T END THERE. I PROMISE TO RETURN BACK
TO SHARE MY TRIALS, TRIBULATIONS AND EXPERIENCES
WITH YOU ONCE AGAIN. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK MY FAMILY
AND FRIENDS IN EGYPT. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK
CAL STATE L.A. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK AMERICA
FOR THIS EXPERIENCE. I WISH EVERYONE GOOD LUCK.
THANK YOU. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] Goodrich:
THANK YOU, MOHAMED. GREAT STORY. AND NOW IT’S AN HONOR
FOR ME TO INTRODUCE OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER,
CHRIS GARDNER. THE MAN WHO KNOWS
A GREAT DEAL ABOUT TRANSFORMATION AND SUCCESS. AS A CHILD GROWING UP
IN MILWAUKEE, MR. GARDNER EXPERIENCED
POVERTY, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, THE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLISM. EARLY IN LIFE,
HE DECIDED HE WOULD CREATE A DIFFERENT FUTURE
FOR HIMSELF; HE WOULD BE
“WORLD CLASS” AT SOMETHING. AFTER SERVICE IN THE NAVY,
MR. GARDNER EARNED A SPOT IN A TRAINING PROGRAM RUN BY
DEAN WITTER REYNOLDS IN SAN FRANCISCO. BUT MAKING ENDS MEET
WAS IMPOSSIBLE ON THE MEAGER SALARY
OF A TRAINEE. MR. GARDNER AND HIS YOUNG SON
BECAME HOMELESS, SLEEPING IN SHELTERS,
AND GETTING BY WITH HELP FROM A LOCAL CHURCH. DETERMINED TO SUCCEED,
MR. GARDNER PUSHED FORWARD. IN THE EARLY 1980’s HE WORKED
WITH [INDISTINCT] ONE OF OUR DISTINGUISHED
[INDISTINCT] AT BEAR STEARNS & COMPANY, MARSHELL INVITED ON OUR BEHALF,
CHRIS TO COME HERE TODAY. AND I COULD TELL YOU THAT THE
FIRST WORDS CHRIS TOLD US WAS [INDISTINCT] WANTS I’LL
DEFINITELY BE HERE AND WITH THAT REASON WE’RE
GRATEFUL TO MARSHELL AS AN [INDISTINCT]
TO BRINGING SUCH A DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER
HERE TODAY. YOU PROBABLY HEARD THE STORY
[INDISTINCT] BACK IN 1987, WITH JUST $10,000,
MR. GARDNER FOUNDED THE BROKERAGE FIRM
“GARDNER RICH.” WENT FROM BEING HOMELESS ON
THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO, TO BEING A MILLIONAIRE BROKER
ON WALL STREET. HIS AMAZING STORY WAS TOLD
IN HIS BEST SELLING MEMOIR AND IN THE
OSCAR NOMINATED FILM, “THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS”,
STARRING, WILL SMITH. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] TODAY MR. GARDNER IS A HIGHLY
SOUGHT-AFTER SPEAKER, AN ENTREPRENEUR,
AND A PHILANTHROPIST. HE IS VERY INVOLVED
WITH INITIATIVES THAT HELP HOMELESS FAMILIES
AND INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EMPLOYED,
BUT CANNOT AFFORD HOUSING. MR. GARDNER HAS WORKED
ON BEHALF OF ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE NATIONAL
FATHERHOOD INITIATIVE, THE NATIONAL EDUCATION
ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION AND THE INTERNATIONAL
RESCUE COMMITTEE. PLEASE WELCOME
MR. CHRIS GARDNER. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] Gardner: AH HA HAA… HO MAN,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I’M HONORED TO BE HERE.
AND I WANNA MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS
WILL SMITH IS NOT COMING. [CROWD LAUGHING] I’M ABSOLUTELY HONORED
TO BE HERE TODAY. I’VE GIVEN A FEW SUCH ADDRESSES
THE LAST FEW YEARS A FEW COMMITMENT ADDRESSES.
I WANTED TO KNOW THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ME
THAN ANY THAT I’VE EVER GIVEN. ANY THAT I’VE EVER GIVEN
EXCEPT ONE, AND THAT WOULD’VE BEEN
MOTHER’S DAY 2008 WHEN MY DAUGHTER
GRADUATED IN COLLEGE. AND WHEN SHE WALKED
ACROSS THE STAGE, SHE BECAME THE FIRST PERSON
IN THE HISTORY OF OUR FAMILY SINCE WE GOT LEER
OFF OF SLAVE SHIPS, 400 YEARS AGO
TO GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE. SO I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL,
I SHARE YOUR JOY, THE JOY AND PRIDE
OF YOUR FAMILIES. I’VE GOT A CHALLENGE. WHAT CAN YOU POSSIBLY SAY
TO YOU FOLKS. ONE OF THE REASONS I HAPPILY
ACCEPTED THIS INVITATION IS BECAUSE IT HAS NOT BEEN
[INDISTINCT] FOR YOU FOLKS. YOU DID JUST GRADUATE
FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND THEN GO ON TO COMPLETE
YOUR DEGREE OF FOUR YEARS. IT WAS NOT A, B, C
1, 2, 3. LIFE HAPPENS. [INDISTINCT] EH? LIFE HAPPENS.
AND I START SAYING MYSELF, OKAY WHAT WOULD I WANT TO HEAR
SOMEONE SAY ON THIS DAY, AS I’VE GRADUATED
FROM COLLEGE? I COULDN’T RELATE BECAUSE I
HAD NEVER GONE TO COLLEGE. SO I MAKE ANOTHER LIST. WHAT DO I WISH
SOMEONE WOULD SAY– WOULD’VE SAID AS I GRADUATED
FROM ARE HIGH SCHOOL? THAT WAS A LONG LIST. I MADE ANOTHER LIST. THINGS I WISH SOMEONE HAD SAID
THAT I’D ACTUALLY LISTEN TO WHEN I GRADUATED FROM
HIGH SCHOOL. THAT WAS AN EVEN LONGER LIST. AND THEN I GOT A PHONE CALL
FROM THE DEAN REMINDED ME THAT CHRIS,
YOU’VE ONLY GOT TEN MINUTES. SO NONE OF THAT WOULD’VE WORKED. THEN I CAME OUT
WITH THIS OTHER IDEA. I’LL USE SOME PHOTOS,
I’LL USE A COUPLE OF PICTURES AND TELL A COUPLE OF STORIES
AND THAT’LL BE IT. TURNS OUT, WE GOT A PROBLEM. SOMEHOW
IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA NOW WE HAVE A DROUGHT. [INDISTINCT] PUT THESE GUYS [INDISTINCT] THE LIBRARY AND DROWNED
ALL YOUR VISUAL EQUIPMENT. SO THAT’S HOW…
SO WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THAT? HERE’S WHAT
I’LL SHARE WITH YOU. I LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT THE TWO MOST IMPORTANT DECISIONS
THAT I EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. I MADE THEM AS A CHILD, I MADE THE OTHER
AS A YOUNG MAN. THE FIRST DECISION WAS
AS A FIVE YEAR OLD BOY WHO GREW UP WITHOUT A FATHER I MADE A DECISION
THAT WHEN I GROW UP, BECOME A MAN
AND HAVE CHILDREN, MY CHILDREN WILL KNOW
WHO THEIR FATHER IS. THAT BECAME
THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION I’VE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THAT BECAME
THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION I’VE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE. HOW DOES IT RELATE TO US?
ALL OF US HERE TODAY? A LOT OF US HAD TO BREAK SOME
GENERATIONAL CYCLES IN ORDER TO SIT HERE TODAY. WHATEVER THE CYCLES WERE,
THE CYCLES OF ALCOHOLISM, DRUG ABUSE, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE,
CHILD ABANDONMENT SOME OF THE MOST SILENT CYCLES,
THE CYCLES OF FEAR, POVERTY AND LITERACY. WE HAD TO BREAK THOSE CYCLES IN
ORDER TO SIT HERE TODAY AND THAT IS WHY I’M SO HONORED
TO STANDING WITH YOU RIGHT NOW. NUMBER TWO, THE SECOND
MOST IMPORTANT DECISION I EVER MADE IN MY LIFE– I MADE IT WHEN I WAS MAYBE
YOUR AGE OR A LITTLE YOUNGER. I MADE THE DECISION THAT I WAS
GOING TO BECOME WORLD CLASS AT WHATEVER I DID
WITH MY LIFE. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] WORLD CLASS. NOT GOOD, NOT PRETTY GOOD,
NOT AVERAGE. AND APPARENTLY,
I TOOK IT TOO FAR. MY FIRST AMBITION IN LIFE,
I MADE UP MY MIND, I WAS GOING TO BECOME
MILES DAVIS. MY MOTHER SAID I CAN BE
ANYBODY, I CHOSE MILES. I STUDIED MUSIC,
MUSIC THEORY, I PLAYED TRUMPET
FOR NINE YEARS. I GOT PRETTY GOOD. BUT ONE DAY,
MY MOTHER EXPLAINS TO ME. SHE SAID, “SON, YOU’RE PRETTY
GOOD WITH THAT THING, BUT YOU CAN’T BE MILES DAVIS. THERE’S ONLY ONE
AND HE’S GOT THAT JOB.” AND WHEN YOUR MOM
PUTS IT TO YOU LIKE THAT, YOU’VE GOT TO FEEL THAT. AND I HAD TO
LOOK AT THE FACTS. THE FACTS WERE,
AT 18 YEARS OF AGE, MILES DAVIS
WAS IN NEW YORK CITY PLAYING WITH QUINCY JONES
AND DIZZY GILLESPIE. AT THE SAME AGE [INDISTINCT] PLAYING WITH SOME BOYS
NAMED POOKIE AND RAY RAY. [CROWD LAUGHING] BUT THE POINT IS,
I’VE MADE THIS DECISION I’M GOING TO BECOME WORLD CLASS
AT WHATEVER I DO WITH MY LIFE. IT WAS ALSO ABOUT THIS TIME
THAT I HEARD DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JUNIOR
SAY, TALKING TO A GROUP OF
MUNICIPAL WORKERS, IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, THE
BEFORE HE WAS ASSASSINATED. I HEARD HIM SAY “WHATEVER YOU’RE GOING TO DO
WITH YOUR LIFE, YOU SHOULD SEEK
TO BECOME WORLD-CLASS AT IT.” I BELIEVE HIS EXACT WORDS WERE, “IF YOU’RE GONNA BE
A GARBAGE MAN, YOU SHOULD SEEK TO BECOME
THE BEST GARBAGE MAN.” THE LESSONS FROM MY MOM,
THE WORDS FROM DR.KING, I PUT IT TOGETHER
AND I REALIZED, THAT CAN ONLY BE
POSSIBLE IF I HAD A PLAN. AND I CANNOT STRESS
ENOUGH TO YOU. THE IMPORTANCE OF A PLAN. EVERYBODY’S GOT HOPE. IT’S BETTER TO HAVE HOPE
AND A PLAN. YOUR PLAN MUST HAVE SOMETHING
THAT I CALL “THE C5 COMPLEX.” YOUR PLAN MUST BE CLEAR,
CONCISE, COMPELLING, CONSISTENT AND COMMITTED. YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A PLAN. YOU’VE GOT TO HAVE A PLAN. [APPLAUSE] AND WHEN YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT
DOING SOMETHING THAT YOU’RE TRULY
PASSIONATE ABOUT, THERE IS NO PLAN B. THREE EXAMPLES. I WISH I HAD PICTURES
TO SHOW YOU. I DON’T, BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE ALL
OF THESE IMAGES IN YOUR MIND. MICHAEL JORDAN. THAT GUY’S GOT SIX NBA
CHAMPIONSHIP RINGS BECAUSE HE WAS COMMITTED
TO PLAN A. NOT PLAN B. OPRAH WINFREY BECAME
THE QUEEN OF ALL MEDIA BECAUSE SHE COMMITTED TO PLAN A.
NOT PLAN B. WHATEVER YOUR POLITICS ARE BARACK OBAMA IS PRESIDENT
OF THE UNITED STATES BECAUSE HE WAS
COMMITTED TO PLAN A. NOT PLAN B. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] AND DO ME A FAVOR, SOMEBODY, ONE
OF OUR GRADUATES, ALL OF YOU,
SOMEBODY SAY THIS WITH ME. “PLAN B SUCKS.” Crowd: PLAN B SUCKS! Gardner: I CAN’T HEAR YOU.
SAY IT, PLAN B SUCKS. Crowd: PLAN B SUCKS! Gardner: I CAN’T HEAR YOU.
DO ME A FAVOR. LOOK HERE, I’VE GOT
ONE, TWO, THREE FOUR $500. HO! SOMEBODY STAND UP
ON YOUR CHAIR, WHERE YOU ARE, SAY IT
LIKE YOU MEAN IT. AND COME AND GET THIS MONEY. COME HERE, GIRL.
COME AND GET THIS MONEY. [INDISTINCT]
COME HERE. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THANK YOU. AND THAT FOLKS, IS HOW YOU DO
10 MINUTES IN L.A. THANK YOU. GOD BLESS. THANK YOU GUYS
[INDISTINCT] THANK YOU, THANK YOU,
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] Goodrich:
